In healthcare this week, Simon Harris claims we need more measures to ‘toughen up’ on self-isolation people entering the country, there has been a dramatic increase in admission to Dublin mental hospital and pub outdoor areas should be non-smoking zones when bars eventually re-open. Simon Harris: We need more measures to ‘toughen up’ on self-isolation for people entering country

“I do think we need to take further measures to toughen up at our airports and ports,” Harris told Dermot and Dave on Today FM this morning. Currently, any person who enters Ireland from overseas is required to self-isolate for two weeks. This is the longest potential incubation period for Covid-19. This rule also applies to Irish citizens returning home. 

‘Dramatic increase’ in admissions to Dublin mental health hospital in last month

“We have already seen a significant increase in admissions relating to intense pressure that Covid-19 restrictions are placing on people. In the past month alone, half of admissions to the hospital have been specifically related to the impact of these restrictions,” said Emma Balmaine, chief executive of the hospital. 

Pub outdoor areas should be non-smoking zones when bars re-open, doctors warn

If outdoor areas are to be used to facilitate social distancing when bars open up again, then smoking should be prohibited from all areas of all pubs when they reopen – said Minister for Health, chair of the policy group Professor Des Cox 

Taoiseach hopes it will be possible for grandparents to visit and hug their grandchildren over the summer

When asked if grandparents will be able to visit and hug their grandchildren this summer, he said: “I think those things, assuming everything else goes in right direction will be possible over the course of the summer but won’t be among the actions being announced for Monday”.
